Find us on:

The 2015 York Spring Festival of New Music is coming and it's set to be as exciting and varied as ever.

Featuring performances by current York-based ensembles as well as University alumni, events will include: an entrancing performance by The Lyre Ensemble; the premier of Marc Yeats's new work for piano the magical control of rain; the return of dynamic contemporary chamber ensemble Dark Inventions; and newly formed soprano/marimba duo PercusSing with a programme of works written especially for them.

This year's Festival will continue its tangent of taking the thrill of new music out into the city, with concerts at the National Centre for Early Music and other venues in the centre of town. There will be opportunities for participation, music being created before your very eyes and ears, rhythms which will sway you, fascinating and challenging discussion, and a host of new sounds to explore. Most of all, though, here at the Festival we are excited to bring you the best of new music today in a way which is uniquely York.

Call for scores

The York Spring Festival of New Music invites student composers from York, Leeds, Sheffield, Manchester and Huddersfield to submit works of up to 5 minutes in duration for flute, cello and percussion, or any combination thereof.

The selected works will be workshopped and recorded by players from Dark Inventions in a workshop chaired by Anna Meredith on Sunday 3rd May 2015, as part of the York Spring Festival of New Music. The deadline for submissions is midnight on Monday 20th April 2015.

  • Up to four works will be selected for workshop and recording.
  • Students from the University of York, York St. John, University of Leeds, Leeds College of Music, University of Sheffield, University of Manchester, Royal Northern College of Music, and the University of Huddersfeld may all submit works.
  • Works may have been previously performed, but not published.
  • There is no entry fee.
  • Submissions are encouraged from students at all levels of their compositional development, but this would be a particularly valuable opportunity for those who have not previously had much work performed.
  • Please enquire if you would like to include smaller percussion such as gongs, bells, triangle, etc.
  • Scores should be submitted with parts, in PDF format.
  • Please email scores and programme note to ysfnmsubmissions@gmail.com; these should not be marked with a name as they will be given anonymously to judges. For more information, please email the Chair at sarah@yorkspringfestival.co.uk.
